Mustangs End Regular Season on Road

The Lund boys and girls basketball teams finished their regular basketball season with a trip to Tonopah and Indian Springs. Against Tonopah, the Lady Mustangs sputtered offensively against the league-leading Lady Muckers as Lund fell 46-30. Sophomore Alondra Dowl led the way in scoring with 17 points. Kelsea Reid had six, Tatum Hendrix, Shannon Ivins, Cierra Jensen, and Emily Cornelison each had two.

The boys played a good game against the Muckers. After trailing for most of the game, the Mustangs came back to take the lead by one with 30 seconds left. The Muckers hit a 3-pointer to regain the lead then hit key free throws to hold on for a 62-54 win. Senior James Harris led Lund with 29 points. Skyler Madsen had 13, Seth Hooley had six. Brandon Creason, Derick Rimington, and Tristen Egbert had two each.

On Friday the Mustangs traveled to Indian Springs. The girls trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half when they came alive in the fourth quarter. Senior Tori Montoya found a different gear as she hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 fourth quarter points to bring the Lady Mustangs all the way back to take the lead with 1:30 left and helped the Lady Mustangs to a 50-46 win. Dowl led all scorers with 18 points. Montoya had a season high 17. Reid chipped in nine points, as Sam Cornelison, Shannon Ivins and McCall Harness each had two points.

The boys finished their season with a close loss to the Thunderbirds. After a sluggish first half, the Mustangs fell behind by 10 points. The second half saw a little more life as the Mustangs came back and had the lead for a short time before Indian Springs won the contest 41-36. Harris finished with 18 points, his season average. Madsen had 11, Creason added five and Rimington scored two.

Of the 21 high school students, all 21 participated in basketball and made it through the entire season, the long bus trips, the trials and triumphs and mostly the lessons learned. For many, like senior Dylan Hyde, it was their first year of playing a high school sport. Great job Mustangs!
