Boys’ Golf Excelling in Early Season Tournaments

By Randy Long White Pine boys’ golf coach

The White Pine boys’ golf team has traveled to three meets thus far. Our first event was in Hawthorne on March 8, where the Bobcats finished in first place with a team score of 434. We were led by Ty Pickel’s 2nd place finish with a score of 78 followed by Nick Marich (80), Chris Young (84), Donny Hiatt (95) and Nick Johnson (97). On March 20 we traveled to Wendover where Nick Marich led the Bobcats winning team score of 435 with his career low of even par 72. Ty fired another 78 followed by Chris with 81, Donny at 99 and Nick Johnson shot a 105. Others traveling to Wendover were Xavier Guardado (101) and Kasey Carson (109). On March 25 and 26 the boys participated in the Pahrump Valley Invitational where our 4-man team finished in fourth after day one with a four-score total of 339. Ty Pickel fired his third consecutive 78 to lead the Bobcats. Chris Young, who for two years has been threatening to shoot in the 70’s, finally broke through with 79 followed by Nick Marich at 84 and Nick Johnson at 98.

Day two arrived with windy conditions and tucked pin placements. Collectively the entire team went several shots higher. As such we weren’t in line for any team awards but we did suffer a team disqualification on day two. As a coach you hope to instill a full knowledge of the rules but time and again it happens in all levels of golf. We misinterpreted a rule that caused a DQ on the part of one player, another suffered a penalty when he also violated a rule but discovered it in time to only cost him two strokes.

In all I am pleased with how the team is doing and the minor set-back in Pahrump may actually be a blessing. Had that infraction occurred at divisional or state it could have cost us dearly. These kids don’t play this game for a living but as I told them, several PGA tour players have suffered the same result. We will learn as best we can from our victories as well as defeats. We next head to Jackpot and I expect the boys to bounce back. The best players always do.
