Election Editorial

By Jon Hickman

Abraham Lincoln said “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” The City of Ely has elected three new city councilmen, Randy Lee, Sam Hanson and Bruce Setterstrom. Gone are Councilmen Shane Bybee, Rom DiCianno and Robert Sedlacek. They leave behind the memories of a job well done, their loyalties, their dedication and their pride. The city thanks them for their service and wishes them well in their future endeavors.

The campaign is over, this is not the time for adversity, now is the time to work together for the good of our community. Promises were made, ideas proclaimed, some good, some bad, but all worthy of debate. The voters of Ely have made their choice through their God given right to vote by choosing three representatives to govern, to represent the people, to be honest and wise, to research the issues and investigate the rumors, not spread them. They’re not there to take up space, nor are they there to argue every point until their blue in the face or give in because they’re too tired to make their point.

They’re there to debate the issues, compromise when possible, show dignity when they win and integrity when they lose. It’s a very simple concept: be the best that you can beÖ the voters will let you know how well you did on the next election day. Remember, the best ideas come from many thoughts, work together for the future of our community, together we will be strong.
