Railroad Named State Treasure

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Northern Railway is one of three repeat winners in the Discover Your Nevada contest. The NNRy was named the “treasure” of the Pony Express Territory. The other repeat winners were the Star Hotel and Basque Restaurant in Elko, the Dangberg Home Ranch in Minden all claimed top honors in their respective tourism territories. All were winners in the inaugural competition last year.

Other tourism “treasurers” announced Monday in the Discover Your Nevada contest are the Lost City Museum in Overton, Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas and Pahrump Valley Winery.

Nominations began July 3, followed by two rounds of online voting.

The contest sponsored by the Nevada Commission on Tourism is designed to encourage Nevadans to get out and explore their own backyard.

For NNRy Executive Director Mark Bassett, the NNRy offers visitors a chance to experience something that they can’t find anywhere else and being named one of Nevada’s treasures proves that people still enjoy coming here..

“It means recognition for all of the hard work that has been accomplished,” Bassett said. “Day in and day out the staff, volunteers and members are working hard to ensure this piece of Americana is here for future generations. It showcases what can-do-itness can accomplish! Winning means that other people across Nevada and across the United States also believe that the Nevada Northern Railway needs to be ‘Discovered.’”

The winning destinations will receive a plaque, a virtual badge signifying it as the Territory’s top treasure, inclusion in a future NCOT eblast, an article mention in the 2014 Nevada Visitor’s guide, mention in a future edition of Nevada Magazine, involved in social media promotions and print advertisements and a potential visit from the Lt. Governor, schedule permitting.

But perhaps most importantly, Bassett said being chosen as one of Nevada’s treasures proves that people not only enjoy coming to the NNRy, but are telling others to come as well, which helps spread the word about the NNRy. .

“This has been an award- inning season for us,” Bassett said. “In addition to winning Discover Your Nevada we were also recognized as the Best Place to Take the Kids in Rural Nevada, The Best Museum in Rural Nevada and our Polar Express was considered the Best Rural Event. Our “secret” – the combined efforts of thousands of people. Our members, volunteers and staff are working constantly in spreading the word on the railroad. When people visit here, we all work hard to make our visitors feel welcome. And obviously all this hard work is paying off.”

The NNRy and Robinson Mining Nevada Company are offering free rides on Aug. 10, 17 and 24 at 1 p.m. For more information, or to reserve space, please, call 775-289-2085.
