The White Pine High varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams started their seasons off strongly at the White Pine Invitational last weekend. The junior varsity team finished third while the varsity team took home the championship.

The teams competed against several schools, including Eureka, Lund, Milford and more. In the end, both coaches and players were happy with their performances during the tournament.

“The tournament was great,” coach Kenna Almberg said. “It was a perfect start to our season. I think the girls did a good job of keeping their intensity level up for two long days of volleyball. That is something we struggled with last year and I hope we know now how important that is.”

The Ladycats hosted the White Pine Invitational as its season-opening matches. As both the varsity and JV teams saw success, players said they were pleased overall with how they performed.

“We worked really well as a team this weekend,” senior Kortni Venturino said. “We have little mistakes that we need to fix, but nothing we can’t handle. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. I think we have a great team this year.”

Throughout the tournament, Almberg said the team saw several individuals step up at different times. And helping to lead the team through it all were the Ladycats’ four seniors.

“I’d like to mention Anna Nicholes, Alli Huntington, Trasie Heggie and Kortni Venturino,” Almberg said. “It is nice to have a core group of dynamic athletes that can also provide great leadership for the team.”

White Pine will be looking to build on its momentum as the team prepares for the start of its league games later this month.

“This weekend, JV plays Eureka on Friday and the varsity team will be going to another tournament in Yerington, where we should be facing some tougher teams,” Almberg said. “We will work hard this week in practice to prepare and I think it will be great to get some faster paced matches before we start our conference games.”
