Kenneth Martinez, 48, of Ely passed away December 25, 2013 due to complications from a stroke. Kenneth was born on October 18, 1965 in Ely, NV. During his childhood he spent time between Ely and Silver City, New Mexico. He graduated from Cobre High School in Bayard, New Mexico in 1983. Shortly after graduation, Kenneth had a calling to join the Army. Kenneth served proudly for 8 years before calling Ely home. He was employed by Ely State Prison and White Pine Honor Camp. During his time of employment, he also became a member of the Nevada National Guard. While in the guard he proudly served at the Monterey Defense Language Institute, in Louisiana when Hurricane Katrina hit and a tour in Iraq with the 72nd MP Company. Kenneth had recently retired and really began to live the life he dreamed of. You could always find him in the mountains. His passions were shooting, hunting, fishing, using his metal detector, spending time with his granddaughter Karessa or simply looking for an adventure. Only he and God knew the roads of the surrounding areas like the back of their hands. His talents included master griller, gunsmith, psychologist, teacher, mentor, protector, heart healer and a shoulder we could always lean on. Where there were kids around you would find Kenneth. He always got down to their level even if it meant swallowing a goldfish or worms just to make them laugh. He lived his life by his own slogan, “Take care of yourself and everyone else can go pound sand”. If there was one thing Kenneth taught us, it was to find the positive in our lives. “If you can’t fix it, you have to find the humor in it” he would always say. No words can ever express how blessed and lucky we were to know him and to be a part of his life.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his brother Kirk Martinez.
He is survived by his parents, Guillermo Nick & Gloria Martinez of Ely, NV; children, Gerald Martinez of Las Vegas, NV; and Melanie (Harold) Gudmundsen of Elko, NV; granddaughter Karessa Jackson of Elko, NV; sisters, Lorraine Leyba of Albuquerque, NM; and Wendy (Bret) Barragan of Ely, NV; and brother Joe (Sylvia) Martinez of Winkleman, AZ; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and extended military family.
