The White Pine High School golf team placed eighth overall out of 20 teams at an invitational meet held at Edgewood golf course in Reno. Coach Randy Long said he was happy with the team’s performance on the difficult golf course.

“I really appreciated getting to travel to the course as a team. It is a really tough golf course with fast greens and deep bunkers, but our guys handled it fairly well,” long said.

The team finished with a combined team score of 466, though junior Bobcat golfer Chris Young tied for second-lowest individual score with a 77.

“It was really nice to see him go back to that course where he placed fifth last year in state and shoot in the 70’s,” Long said.

Senior golfer Ty Pickell had the second-lowest score on the team, shooting an 85. Long pointed out that both Pickell and Young have been the top two on the team each meet and are currently tied for stroke average for the season. Senior Nick Johnson also was able to get in under the triple-digit mark with a score of 92, impressing Long with just how far he has progressed over the course of the season.

Rounding out the individual score for the team were Seth Robertson with a 103, followed by Justin Kirchner with a 109 and not far behind, Tyler Kane with a 112.

“I was really happy with Johnson’s performance and I think he was too. Also Robertson has become a really nice addition to this squad and is probably our most improved player overall,” Long said.

The invitation to the Edgewood meet let Long send his junior varsity team to play in the Spring Creek meet that was originally scheduled for the date. it was the first time, according to Long, that White Pine has been able to send their junior varsity team to an away meet.

The team will have two meets, back-to-back, before getting ready for divisionals on their home course. They will travel to Elko on Wednesday and Wells on Thursday. Divisonals begin May 14 at 10 a.m. Long said he is currently seeking help from members of the community to help keep score at the tournament. Anyone interest should contact the coach at the golf shop by phone, 775-289-4095.
