Joy McClane Bybee  

  Joy McClane Bybee, 91, of Ely, Nevada left this mortal world to join his Heavenly Father on June 19,2014.

Joy was born to parents George Myron and Ruhama Victoria Adair Bybee on November 27,1922  in Tropic, Utah. He went to high school in Tropic and Cedar City, Utah continuing on to earn an Associate Degree from the College of Southern Utah.

Joy came to Ely in 1938 to work summers ranching with his older brother Burrell. He met the love of his life, Helen Ida Gardner on the Georgetown Ranch. He joined the military on April 4, 1944. During World War II he served in the United States Army Air Corp as a Gunner on the B-17. He was discharged from the Army as a Staff Sargent in 1946.

He and Helen were married on August 14,1945. Their marriage was solemnized on March 6,1965 at the St. George Utah Temple. They raised their family of three sons and a daughter in Ely, Nevada. Joy worked as a Foundry General Foreman at Kennecott Copper Corporation for 30 years. In 1972 he bought Roy’s Motel and renamed it the Bristlecone Motel, expanding it from seven units to thirty-one units.

He and Helen were active in the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints for their whole life. Joy was a lifelong volunteer for  Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award in 1975. His community involvement included: Ely Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and President; Nevada Northern Railroad Museum; Nevada Tourism Board; White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation and was presented the Key to the City of Ely in 1991.

In retirement Joy and Helen traveled extensively, square danced, attended both Bybee and Gardner family reunions and enjoyed every minute he could spend with the most important thing in his life- FAMILY.

Joy is survived by his wife Helen Bybee, his sister Rose Bent and Children: Hal (CrisAnn), Craig (Jodi), Bern (Charlene), Joy Lyn (Mike)  Grandchildren: Lynlee, Jared, Mac, Caleb, Jacob, Shannon, Tanya, Alex, Eric, Jessica and Ryan;   Great-Grandchildren: Dakota, Beau, Logan, Audra, Ava and Easton

He is preceded in death by his parents George Myron and Ruhama Victoria Bybee; Sisters; Wanda, Vernice, Julia, Georgia and Juanita ;  Brothers; Burrell, Shannon and Mayo (Spike);  Great-Granddaughter, Elena Victoria.

Funeral was held on Monday June 23, 2014 at the Ely LDS Stake Center with burial at Ely City Cemetery

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America.
