On Oct. 4, at approximately 2:45 a.m., Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers responded to a fatal accident I-80 E/B mile marker 289 (near the Carlin Tunnels). Preliminary investigation indicates that a 1981 Chevy pickup was traveling E/B on I-80 near mile marker 289 when the driver allowed the pickup to drift into the dirt median. The driver steered the pickup to the right causing it to rotate clockwise and reenter the highway. The pickup crossed both lanes and traveled off the right dirt shoulder down an embankment and overturned. During the rollover, all occupants were ejected. At this time, the identity of the driver is still under investigation. The occupants of the vehicle were: Asay Crofts, age 22, from Carlin, Nevada; Caleb Collins, age 18, from Baldwin City, Kansas; Jeremiah Stills, age 18, from Carlin, Nevada. Mr. Stills succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Mr. Crofts and Mr. Collins were transported to University of Utah hospital for serious injuries. Failure to maintain travel lane and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in this accident.
