Anyone who has driven to Las Vegas or Reno from Ely has assuredly seen them. The dozens of big rig truckers hauling their 18-wheelers across the state or country while driving on US50 or NV318. But what happens when one of those trucks break down or blows a tire 100 miles away from the closest city?

They call Lance Gale and his crew at Gale Oil and Tire.

“I remember one night where I drove out of town and changed a trucker’s tire in negative 30 degree weather at 4:30 a.m. I don’t know many other places in the state that would do that,” Gale said.

His business covers a 150 mile radius from Ely, guaranteeing trucking companies a 24-hour option to get the necessary repairs made at any hour. And while it is just one aspect of Gale’s multi-faceted business model, he said it is that kind of service and passion that has allowed him to stay open for 35 years. That, and the great and continued support of the community. He has posters and signs thanking him from customers that have received five to twenty years of service from the auto shop.

“We’ve always taken pride in taking care of people and they have taken care of us as well. I really want to thank our customers for that,” the owner said.

But big rigs are just the beginning for Gale. Part of his business operates as a bulk fuel and oil distributor, offering common oil changes to selling racing fuel and partnering with the Silver State Classic Open Road Challenge twice a year. Another part offers what he thinks is the most comprehensive inventory for tires, which can sometimes reach back to replacing tires that are not even in production anymore.

“This community is an interesting place because people drive everything from new trucks to classic and restored cars that can date back to the 1940’s or earlier,” Gale said, mentioning that he gets some confused feedback from supply companies when he tries to find old or rare tire models.

“I like to think that just about anyone who comes through our door will be able to get the help or the tires they need,” he continued.

Those needs are often dictated by the sometimes extreme weather in Ely, but it’s not just snow and ice that brings in customers looking for better traction.

“We actually do a lot of business with the hunters that come to town during hunting season. They usually need off road tires that can get them to their hunting sites. We also take care of their ATV and UTV tires as well, which some people might not know.”

His tire selection extends to agricultural tires for farming equipment and even more dangerous models that Gale claims most autoshops won’t dare to touch.

“We’ll even fix ‘split-rim’ tires that are usually too dangerous for most places to handle. But we make sure to keep our staff properly trained on a quarterly basis and have the right equipment to handle those kinds of things.”

But for all the services Gale Oil and Tire provides, none is more important than taking care of both his customers and his employees Gale said.

“It doesn’t seem like it has been 35 years already. But that might be because I’ve had such great employees, some of which have worked for me for years. They are a great group of people and they make coming to work fun,” he said.
