Obit-Vinny Solferino1July 6, 1926 – February 16, 2016

Vinny was born in San Pietro Avellana, Italy on July 6, 1926.  She attended school there until she was eight years old.  During those years the students were required to wear uniforms, by the Fascist Dictator Mousilini.

At the age of eight, she traveled to America with her mother Rosina and her brother Florindo.  They sailed to New York and landed at Ellis Island, where they were processed and entered the United States.

Vinny’s father, Giovanni, secured a new job in Ely, Nevada.  He worked for The Nevada Northern Railroad where he became the General Shop Foreman.

Vinny attended grade school in Ely, and graduated from White Pine High School in 1947. While she was in high school she delivered telegrams for Western Union, and worked for JC Penney as a Display Coordinator, as World War 2 was coming to a end.

In August of 1950, she married Tony Solferino in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ely, Nevada. They moved to Oxnard, California where Tony was employed by the United States Navy as an Electronics Engineer at Point Mugu.  Vinny participated in Navy Social Programs that supported the Engineers.

Vinny was an active member of the Church Choir at Saint Anthony’s Parish in Oxnard, California.

In 1986, Vinny and Tony moved to Santa Maria, California where they retired.

In 1989, they moved to Reno, Nevada to be closer to their family. Vinny and Tony were in the Choir at Little Flower Church for almost twenty years.  She also sang in the choir at Saint Rose of Lima for a period of time.

Vinny enjoyed shopping, reading, gardening and needle point.

Vinny was preceded in death by her mother Rosina, her father Giovanni, and her husband Tony.  Vinny is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Richard & (Yolanda) Solferino; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law Corey & (Karla) Solferino, Anthony & (Lacey) Solferino; brother Florindo Mariani & (Kathleen Wills), sister Anna & (Tim) Curtin; great-grandchildren Monique Solferino, Mike Solferino, Paisley Solferino, MacKenzie Solferino, & Paitynn Solferino; nephews & nieces; Giovanna & (Lee) Jones, Florindo T. & (Shari) Mariani, Roman Mariani, Gino & (Jennifer) Mariani, Rex & (Lisa) Curtin, Royce & (Karen) Curtin, Nanette & Joe) Gwaltney, Jennifer & (Patrick) Martinez, Chris & (Catalina) Jones, Gina Jones, Dominic Mariani, Ryan Curtin, Michael Curtin, Sean Curtin, Carson Mariani, Joey, Mariani, Jacob Morris, Bennett Morris, &  great great nephew Nick Bridge.

Recitation of the Rosary will be Friday, March 4, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Ross, Burke & Knobel Mortuary, 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ely, Nevada. Graveside Services will follow at Ely Cemetery.
