About 50 people attended a dinner and auction at the Bristlecone Convention Center on April 29. Nevada’s Chapter C of the Philanthropic Education Organization hosted the auction and raised over $4,500 to be used for local scholarships.

“It’s really a great event,” chapter president Susan Wetmore said. “All the money stays in the community.”

PEO is a Des Moines, Iowa based international organization founded in 1869 to advance educational opportunities for women.

Auctioned items included photographs of the historical railroad in Ely, paintings by local artists and handcrafted wooden tables and chairs. A two-night stay at the Strater Hotel in Durango, Colorado, including two tickets for the Durango & Silverton Railroad, earned a winning bid of $700. An air tour of Arches National Park and the surrounding region garnered $400, as did a set of Vortex Viper binoculars.

Tourism and Recreation Executive Director Ed Spear took on the auctioneering duties and was backed up by Emcee Kelly Sturgeon. Spear spent about an hour auctioning off a total of 15 items, while attendees browsed an additional silent auction on dozens of artistic and decorative items.

“We want to convey our appreciation to all who participated in raising this money,” said auction chairwoman Leslie Martin.
