Not everyone who came to the 2A Southern Dual wrestling meet last Friday in Ely got to wrestle more than once, although some did, two or more times.

The reason being that some teams don’t have a wrestler in a given weight class, and if the other team you were facing in the dual did have one, they got the points for their team by forfeit. If neither team had a wrestler in that weight, it was a double forfeit with no points being awarded.

Seven teams competed in the duals at Ely, which is used as a way of seeding the wrestlers in a given weight for the 2A Southern regionals in Laughlin Feb. 2.

At the duals in Ely, White Pine topped Lincoln County 48-24. Luke Finicum (152) pinned Kyle Zierow and Zeke Vinson (182) pinned Gavin Plasden in the only two matches contested.

Against Pahranagat Valley, the Panthers won 39-24. Justin Mabson (170) beat Jonathan Dillingham by fall; Sven Pickens (160) lost an 8-7 decision to Garrett Bowen; Kegan Hexem (195) was pinned by Reece Thornton; and Jorge Chamorro (220) lost by pin to Jon Stewart in the third period.

The Bobcats beat West Wendover, 30-24, in a close match. Sebastian Lyons (126) lost by pin to Ricardo Cervantes; Finicum (152) lost to Bryan Reynoso; Pickens (160) pinned Colten Hernandez; Mabson (170) lost to Tristan LaCombe; and Vinson (182) pinned Kodi Cook.

Against Tonopah, the Bobcats won another close match, 42-36, with Sebastian Lyons, Finicum, Eric Pickens and Sven Pickens all pinning their opponent.

The final individual seeding into the Southern Regional have Lyons No. 3, Finicum No. 3, Garret Christensen (145) No. 7, Eric Pickens, Sven Pickens and Justin Mabson each as the No. 1 seed, Hexem No. 3 and Chamorro as No. 5.

In Laughlin, the top four finishers in each weight advance to the 2A state wrestling meet Feb. 9 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
