‘Improprieties' probe continues
With White Pine County Sheriff Dan Watts and investigators from the Nevada Department of Public Safety Investigation Division probing possible improprieties in the County Clerk's office from several years ago, the county commission discussed the possibility of having to expend between $9,000 and $10,000 for a forensic audit Aug. 27. No decision was made.

District Attorney Rich Sears told the commission that he was still trying to determine if he could prove a case in court before deciding if hiring an outside forensic auditor would be necessary.

The commission's discussion included that state investigators had insufficient evidence of fraud against a former county employee and that Sheriff Dan Watts was working with the state Public Safety Investigation Division, formerly the Nevada Division of Investigation, to determine if there was sufficient evidence to advance the case to prosecution.

“Right now all we can say is it is under investigation,” Watts said Thursday. He added that he hoped the case could be resolved during the coming months.

When asked if criminal charges could be pending, the sheriff responded, “There could be.”

The former employee of the County Clerk's office has not been identified publicly.

The county commission discussed an ongoing investigation of discrepancies on Feb. 27 when they approved audited financial statements for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2006.

Watts said the timeframe under investigation dates back earlier than 2006.

" That was only one take on it. People are pretty hush hush about the whole thing. What's another take on it? Penny for your thoughts... (put it on my tab :) "

" Holy COW! I appreciate some of you standing up for whats right, but most of you got the story wrong. If you want the facts, ask the girls in the Clerk's Office. Did anyone think of that? "

" That's kinda what I've heard too. (Though I'm sure to be thorough, they've looked into everybody.) I guess it could possibly tie back to other people, but I doubt it. Personally I think it's all a probably a big oversight that caused some really big problems.(It could be more devious, that's why it's good that the cops are checking into it.) I've heard if people were just big enough to put pride aside and ask some questions, this whole horrible ordeal could've been avoided. I'm sorry if that comes across harsh, but that's what I've heard. "

" Quite a few people at the courthouse know whats going on and talk to their familys. The person under investigation hasnt worked at the clerks office in several years. When theres enough evidence to prove criminal activity, charges will be made. Right now theres still a slight chance the problem was just incompetence. "

Me too, man. Me too. I guess the sick curiosity gets the better of us all! But then..... sometimes one might feel that the possibility of swaying the public opinion in a good way is worth sifting through the nonsense from time to time...... My thoughts, nobody is above vice, some are just better at fighting off temptation then others. Is Donna under investigation? Probably, but because she worked in the office. I'm sure they're all being investigated. That doesn't make her guilty. Her decision to retire early doesn't make her guilty either. I think it's more coincidence, really. Time will tell. If she is, that'll be a darn shame. But it isn't right to jump to conclusions prematurely. Do I want them to find the culprit? Absolutely. But I want them to be darn sure it's the right guy! "

" WTF - you could brush up on your reading comprehension! Benefits is a contributing factor to the STORY if you're using it as an excuse! I'll let you keep the candlestick where it is!

Better go, got a beehive hairdo to keep up with. "

WTF wrote on Sep 5, 2008 11:45 AM:

" ms...you are the one who mentioned the benefits in the first thread of this comment section. I really think that you should leave the investigating to the REAL super sleuths. I suspect it is truley YOU who killed Col. Mustard in the library, I have yet to discover though where exactly did you stash that candlestick?? OHHHH
p.s. I am no fan of the Bath family nor am I a fan of babbling idiots. I often ask myself why do I read these threads?? "

ms wrote on Sep 5, 2008 11:25 AM:

" GOD SAVE THE QUEEN AND HER LOYAL *&^ kissin SUBJECTS! Me thinks dolts protest too much. If she isn't under investigation then she was over the person who is which means she wasn't too quick. It's real convenient to quit during an investigation due to reduced benefits. Being affiliated with the story doesn't mean you know the people - it would mean you're affiliated with the story! THE STORY IS NOT ABOUT BENEFITS.... "

Im Affiliated Too wrote on Sep 5, 2008 10:53 AM:

" MS..........I agree with "affiliated": "Get your facts straight. Donna is quiting for her benefits. ...... Donna is honest and ethical and absolutely NO ONE can prove that statement wrong!"

How can you say "don't bring up benefits again" when that is the true reason Donna retired! Donna and the Bath family are pillars of the community and it appears that you are the one who is using the investigation to find fault with Mrs. Bath. "

ms wrote on Sep 5, 2008 8:51 AM:

" PS - no disrepect to the rest of Ely - who I'm sure are asking the same question. Please don't bring up benefits again... "

ms wrote on Sep 5, 2008 8:42 AM:

" Well ya'll sure seem to think the Bath's are majestic and everyone knows who they are, small town small minds. The story is not about State retirement, it's about an investigation. Just keep deflecting the real story to benefits if it makes you feel better "

WTF wrote on Sep 5, 2008 7:43 AM:

" ms; you seem to be a bit clueless here. There have been many retirements lately due to the changes in benefit coverage for public employees, not only on the county level but also within the city government. In fact, just under Donna's information the story clearly states "Several White Pine County employees and four of seven school district retirements this past summer were because of the change in insurance rules" Add these facts together and read the story from the headline down and see that the article is actually about the new county clerk and not an innuendo concerning the retirement of Bath. "

" I can see how a person of your supreme intelligence could jump to conclusions but at least consider signing your log on name with the correct initials “BS”. "

ms wrote on Sep 4, 2008 8:40 PM:

" Hey I didn't write the story! U R pretty defensive. Like I said "how affiliated are U? Anyone reading this would come to the same conclusion. "

thats what I said wrote on Sep 4, 2008 3:54 PM:

" If you know anything about the Bath family, you might know that they own several businesses and properties in the community, I dont think keeping the bills paid are the issue. Instead of being ignorant of the facts surrounding her retirement, why dont you just take them as they are. Besides, pointing the finger would be more damaging than not. Consider it. "

ms wrote on Sep 4, 2008 2:03 PM:

" If you say so, it must be true! I did phrase them all in questions, not accusations. You have to admit this story looks pretty incriminating because no…most people would not and could not quit their jobs over benefits. Insurance benefits alone do not pay the rent and feed the family. Maybe she’s in a position where it doesn’t matter but leaving the position and then the headline and not naming names could be more damaging. Say…you did mention you were “affiliated with the story”. ;) "

Affiliated with Story wrote on Sep 4, 2008 11:30 AM:

" Goes to show just how strong the ignorance runs through this town. Get your facts straight. Donna is quiting for her benefits. Havent you heard what the State has done to employees who work over 20 years? They lose their benefits. Wouldnt you quit to keep your health insurance paid? I would. Donna is honest and ethical and absolutely NO ONE can prove that statement wrong. "

ms wrote on Sep 4, 2008 10:30 AM:

" State investigators never have sufficient evidence even when the facts are staring them straight in the face. So Bath retired for the health insurance benefits? hmmm? She's been serving since the early 1990s? hmm? I think that answers who they are investigating? "
