New Great Lakes Airlines flight schedule: 5:36 a.m. departure
You'll have to wake up earlier -- much earlier -- if you want to catch a local flight to Denver.

Beginning Dec. 1, Great Lakes Airlines departures are scheduled to leave Ely's Yelland Field Airport at 5:36 a.m., arriving in Moab at 7:53 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) before touching down in Denver at 9:20 a.m.

The 11:30 a.m. flight from Ely to Denver will be discontinued at that time, as will the current departure times from Denver.

Starting next month, Saturday flights from Denver will take off at 4 p.m. MST and arrive in Ely at 5:50 p.m., following a brief stop in Moab. Sunday through Friday flights to Ely are scheduled to leave Denver at 7:25 p.m., touching down at Yelland Field at 9:15 p.m.

While the new flight schedule may pose an inconvenience to local travelers, it's expected to create even greater challenges for the county's certified fire and rescue volunteers, according to Fire District Chief David Hendrix.

Instead of relaxing on their days off from work, those volunteers currently spend much of their free time at the airport.

Without their help, the facility would likely remain out of compliance with the Federal Aviation Administration's revised fire safety and rescue requirements, Hendrix said.

Under those requirements, airports with commercial airline flights must maintain fully staffed and equipped fire stations for each departure and arrival.

Given the possibility of even stricter federal requirements down the line, the county may need to look in to the possibility of hiring full-time staff to cover the airport, Hendrix told county commissioners Oct. 28.

"I feel that we might have to possibly advise Great Lakes of the costs that White Pine County will have to endure in order to provide (these) services," he added.

Commissioners plan to address the issue at their next meeting.

" If Great Lakes Airline is profiting from having business there at the airport, then they (sorry, typo) should be shouldering part of the cost of maintaining required staff and equipment, or have their own. White Pine County cannot afford to give away services. Folks are experiencing tough times financially and need the load lightened, not added on to. "
